Take steps to keep your heart as healthy as possible, whether or not you have a valve problem. Heart-healthy lifestyle steps include:
- Quitting smoking
- Getting enough physical activity (see the fact sheet from Health.gov on physical activity for older adults)
- Reaching a healthy weight
- Eating a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in any kind of fat
- Managing stress levels
If you have been diagnosed with a heart valve problem, be sure to discuss your amount and level of physical activity with your healthcare provider. If your valve is severely damaged, your provider may recommend that you limit strenuous activity to avoid overworking your heart.
