If you have any type of vein problem, some simple steps can help.
- Being physically active, for example by walking, will help increase blood circulation in your legs. Caution: Hard exercise may make varicose veins worse. You need to check with your health care professional before starting any exercise program.
- Avoid sitting or standing for too long or sitting with your legs crossed. These actions block the flow of blood.
- When you are sitting or lying down, keep your legs above the level of your heart.
- Use anti-fatigue mats in places where you stand for long periods, such as in front of the kitchen sink.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing so that blood can flow easily around your waist, legs, or groin.
- Wear well-fitting shoes with low heels.
- Lose weight (if you need to) to take extra pressure off your veins.
- A low-salt diet will help relieve swelling in your legs.
- During flights and car rides, pump your feet up and down while sitting to increase blood flow.
- During long flights, try to walk up and down the aisle once an hour if possible.
- During car rides, try to stop every hour to get out of the car and walk for a few minutes to help increase blood flow.
